Nor does assigning labels such as <strong>\u201cenergizing,\u201d \u201ccalming,\u201d \u201crelaxing,\u201d or \u201cuplifting\u201d<\/strong> to different scenes represent a complete transformation from a lighting product into a health technology solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The real questions emotional lighting needs to answer are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">What type of light is actually received by the human eye?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Which retinal photoreceptors are stimulated, and to what extent?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">At what time, from what direction, and for how long does light enter the eye?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">How does it influence alertness, emotional states, and cognitive networks in the brain?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">For whom, in which environments, and under what tasks does it create meaningful effects?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">How can these effects be measured, validated, and ultimately translated into repeatable control strategies?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Without answers to these questions, <strong>\u201cemotional lighting\u201d risks becoming another technology buzzword wrapped in consumer marketing\u2014following the path of concepts such as \u201cfull spectrum,\u201d \u201ceye-care lighting,\u201d and \u201ccircadian lighting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large has-lightbox\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/zh_cn\/%e8%b4%ad%e7%89%a9\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-1024x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-1024x204.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-768x153.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-1536x306.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-2048x408.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-18x4.jpg 18w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-1140x227.jpg 1140w, https:\/\/lightingrecipe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Link-to-shop-banner-600x119.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">01 | Emotional Lighting Has the Right Direction, but Its Evidence Boundaries Must Be Clearly Defined<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The fact that light can influence human emotions is not difficult to understand. Once light enters the eye, it simultaneously activates two interconnected pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The first is the <strong>visual image-forming pathway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">This pathway is related to the brightness, color, contrast, material perception, and spatial hierarchy that we see. Soft indirect lighting, warm colors, and natural variations between light and shadow may create feelings of relaxation, familiarity, or safety. In contrast, strong brightness contrasts, disturbing glare, flicker, or oppressive overhead lighting may contribute to stress, fatigue, and discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The second pathway is the <strong>non-visual\u2014or more precisely, non-image-forming\u2014physiological pathway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Light interacts with the rods, cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (<strong>ipRGCs<\/strong>) containing melanopsin. Together, these photoreceptors influence circadian rhythms, melatonin responses, alertness, sleep, pupil responses, and may further affect emotional and cognitive states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Therefore, the influence of light on emotions involves multiple interacting factors, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">spectral input,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">visual perception,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">circadian regulation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">arousal and alertness,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">spatial meaning,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">individual preferences,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">and cultural experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">This also means that statements such as <strong>\u201cblue makes people calm,\u201d \u201corange makes people energetic,\u201d or \u201cpurple increases happiness\u201d<\/strong>\u2014even if correlations are observed in specific experiments\u2014cannot be directly transformed into universal prescriptions across different populations, times, and environments without considering the original experimental conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Age, chronotype, previous light exposure history, psychological state, cultural background, and even the task being performed at that moment may all influence the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Therefore, I prefer to define most current consumer-oriented \u201cemotion modes\u201d as: <strong>ambient scenarios carrying emotional meanings, rather than evidence-based psychological intervention solutions that have already been scientifically validated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">This approach protects innovation while respecting the boundaries of science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>02 | Why Are Illuminance, Color Temperature, and Color Alone Far From Enough?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Many existing \u201cemotional lighting solutions\u201d tend to be described using a few simple parameters: 2700 K or 6500 K; 300 lx or 1000 lx; warm color or cool color; direct lighting or indirect lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">These parameters are certainly important, but they are still insufficient to describe a complete light exposure experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Take 500 lx as an example. Is this horizontal illuminance measured on a desktop, or vertical illuminance received at eye level? Is the light source above the head, in front of the person, or from the side? How much short-wavelength content is present in the spectrum? Where is the user actually looking? Does the exposure occur in the morning, at noon, or before bedtime? Does it last for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 8 hours?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The same 500 lx can have completely different effects on vision, circadian rhythm, alertness, and emotional state depending on the spectrum, direction, field-of-view exposure, and timing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Similarly, color temperature is not a sufficient indicator of physiological impact. Two light sources with the same 3000 K CCT can have completely different spectral power distributions (SPD) and may generate different levels of melanopic stimulation. Conversely, light sources with different color temperatures can be engineered spectrally to deliver similar melanopic doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Therefore, emotional lighting cannot stop at: <strong>CCT + Lux + RGB color scenes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">It must move toward: <strong>SPD + Alpha-opics + eye-level spatial light dose + timing + human factors + psychological and neurological responses<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">This is the fundamental difference between a <strong>\u201cLighting Recipe\u201d<\/strong> approach and ordinary color-tuning scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>03 | Why Are Alpha-opics the Scientific Foundation of Healthy Lighting?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The CIE S 026 standard established the <strong>\u03b1-opic photometry system<\/strong>, which describes the weighted stimulation of five types of retinal photoreceptors by light:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">S-cones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">M-cones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">L-cones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Rods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">The melanopsin-containing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC) system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Among these metrics, <strong>\u03b1-opic EDI (Equivalent Daylight Illuminance)<\/strong> represents the equivalent daylight illuminance, relative to standard D65 daylight, that would produce the same level of stimulation in a specific photoreceptor system. <strong>\u03b1-opic DER (Daylight Efficacy Ratio)<\/strong> describes the photoreceptor stimulation characteristics of a light source relative to its photopic visual efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Put simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>EDI answers: \u201cHow much light dose did the eye actually receive?\u201d<\/strong><br><strong>DER answers: \u201cWhat physiological characteristics does this spectrum provide per unit of visual illuminance?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">These two metrics cannot replace each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">A light source may have a very high <strong>melanopic DER<\/strong>, but if the installed lighting system does not effectively deliver light into the user\u2019s eyes, the actual eye-level <strong>melanopic EDI<\/strong> may still be insufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Conversely, a lighting system may achieve the target melanopic EDI simply by using very high illuminance, but this could introduce issues such as glare, excessive energy consumption, or reduced visual comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Therefore, a truly complete healthy lighting loop should be understood as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>LED spectrum characteristics \u2192 luminaire distribution \u2192 spatial reflections \u2192 user eye-level exposure \u2192 time-based dose \u2192 human response<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The implementation of <strong>GB\/T 46119\u20142025 \u201cDose of Non-Visual Biological Effects of Light on Human Eyes\u201d<\/strong> in March 2026 further demonstrates that China\u2019s healthy lighting industry is moving toward a <strong>\u201cdose-based\u201d approach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">However, it is important to emphasize that non-visual light dose standards provide a foundation for measurement and research. They do <strong>not<\/strong> mean that scientifically validated lighting prescriptions for anxiety, depression, or specific emotional outcomes have already been established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The CIE position statement <strong>\u201cIntegrative Lighting: Providing the Right Light at the Right Time\u201d<\/strong> also clearly recommends the use of the CIE S 026 measurement framework in research and applications, while acknowledging that many practical application questions still require further research and consensus building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">This is the scientific attitude the industry should embrace: <strong>Recognize progress \u2014 while also recognizing what remains unknown.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>04 | Moving from \u201cColor\u2013Emotion\u201d to \u201cLight\u2013Brain\u2013Emotion\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">If emotional lighting aims to establish a truly scientific foundation, relying solely on questionnaire-based evaluations is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Subjective assessments are certainly important because emotions inherently involve personal experiences. However, if the only feedback is \u201cI feel relaxed\u201d or \u201cI feel happier,\u201d it remains difficult to distinguish whether the effect comes from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">the spectral characteristics of the light;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">personal color preferences;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">psychological priming created by scenario names and descriptions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">novelty effects; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">placebo-like responses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Therefore, future research needs to combine psychological scales with more objective measures of human responses, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Electroencephalography (EEG);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Heart rate variability (HRV);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Pupil responses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Sleep and activity rhythms;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Skin conductance and autonomic nervous system indicators;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The key value of <strong>fMRI<\/strong> lies in its ability to help researchers observe changes in brain regions and functional networks under different spectral compositions, light doses, and exposure conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">The research focus should not simply ask: <strong>\u201cWhich color do participants prefer?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Instead, it should explore deeper questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Does light alter neural networks related to alertness and arousal?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Does it influence emotional valence and emotion regulation processes?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">How do regions such as the amygdala, thalamus, hypothalamus, and prefrontal cortex respond?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Are there reproducible relationships between spectrum, timing, and dose?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">How do individual differences influence responses?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:16px\">Are subjective experiences consistent with measurable brain responses?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">This is also the core logic behind Lighting Recipe Studio\u2019s ongoing research into emotional light recipes and fMRI-based studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Our goal is not to use a single experiment to claim that \u201ca certain type of light can treat a certain emotional condition.\u201d Instead, we aim to establish a more rigorous research framework:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>Starting from light input \u2192 applying retinal photoreceptor-weighted measurement \u2192 connecting to brain functional responses \u2192 returning to real-world spatial control and validation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Moving from <strong>\u201ccolor associations\u201d to \u201cmechanisms of action,\u201d<\/strong> and from <strong>\u201cuser preference\u201d to \u201cquantifiable, verifiable, and reproducible outcomes\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 this is the real threshold that emotional lighting must overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>05 | The Emotional Light Recipe, as Defined by LRS, Is Not a Fixed Set of Lighting Scenes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">Within the research framework of <strong>\u5149\u914d\u65b9\u7814\u7a76\u9662\uff08Lighting Recipe Studio, LRS\uff09<\/strong>, an emotional light recipe consists of at least seven fundamental dimensions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>1. Spectrum<\/strong><br>It is not enough to look only at CCT. A complete evaluation should include the full spectral power distribution (SPD), Duv, color quality metrics, and \u03b1-opic responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>2. Dose<\/strong><br>It is not enough to consider horizontal illuminance alone. Many existing \u201cemotional lighting solutions\u201d tend to be described using a few simple parameters: 2700 K or 6500 K; 300 lx or 1000 lx; warm color or cool color; direct lighting or indirect lighting. These parameters are certainly important, but they are still insufficient to describe a complete light exposure experience. Take 500 lx as an example. Is this horizontal illuminance measured on a desktop, or vertical illuminance received at eye level? Is the light source above the head, in front of the person, or from the side? How much short-wavelength content is present in the spectrum? Where is the user actually looking? Does the exposure occur in the morning, at noon, or before bedtime? Does it last for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 8 hours? The same 500 lx can have completely different effects on vision, circadian rhythm, alertness, and emotional state depending on the spectrum, direction, field-of-view exposure, and timing conditions. Similarly, color temperature is not a sufficient indicator of physiological impact. Two light sources with the same 3000 K CCT can have completely different spectral power distributions (SPD) and may generate different levels of melanopic stimulation. Conversely, light sources with different color temperatures can be engineered spectrally to deliver similar melanopic doses. Emotional lighting is not simply about turning lights blue, green, orange, or purple. Nor does assigning labels such as \u201cenergizing,\u201d \u201ccalming,\u201d \u201crelaxing,\u201d or \u201cuplifting\u201d to different scenes represent a complete transformation from a lighting product into a health technology solution. The real questions emotional lighting needs to answer are: Without answers to these questions, \u201cemotional lighting\u201d risks becoming another technology buzzword wrapped in consumer marketing\u2014following the path of concepts such as \u201cfull spectrum,\u201d \u201ceye-care lighting,\u201d and \u201ccircadian lighting.\u201d 01 | Emotional Lighting Has the Right Direction, but Its Evidence Boundaries Must Be Clearly Defined The fact that light can influence human emotions is not difficult to understand. Once light enters the eye, it simultaneously activates two interconnected pathways. The first is the visual image-forming pathway. This pathway is related to the brightness, color, contrast, material perception, and spatial hierarchy that we see. Soft indirect lighting, warm colors, and natural variations between light and shadow may create feelings of relaxation, familiarity, or safety. In contrast, strong brightness contrasts, disturbing glare, flicker, or oppressive overhead lighting may contribute to stress, fatigue, and discomfort. The second pathway is the non-visual\u2014or more precisely, non-image-forming\u2014physiological pathway. Light interacts with the rods, cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) containing melanopsin. Together, these photoreceptors influence circadian rhythms, melatonin responses, alertness, sleep, pupil responses, and may further affect emotional and cognitive states. Therefore, the influence of light on emotions involves multiple interacting factors, including: This also means that statements such as \u201cblue makes people calm,\u201d \u201corange makes people energetic,\u201d or \u201cpurple increases happiness\u201d\u2014even if correlations are observed in specific experiments\u2014cannot be directly transformed into universal prescriptions across different populations, times, and environments without considering the original experimental conditions. Age, chronotype, previous light exposure history, psychological state, cultural background, and even the task being performed at that moment may all influence the outcome. Therefore, I prefer to define most current consumer-oriented \u201cemotion modes\u201d as: ambient scenarios carrying emotional meanings, rather than evidence-based psychological intervention solutions that have already been scientifically validated. This approach protects innovation while respecting the boundaries of science. 02 | Why Are Illuminance, Color Temperature, and Color Alone Far From Enough? Many existing \u201cemotional lighting solutions\u201d tend to be described using a few simple parameters: 2700 K or 6500 K; 300 lx or 1000 lx; warm color or cool color; direct lighting or indirect lighting. These parameters are certainly important, but they are still insufficient to describe a complete light exposure experience. Take 500 lx as an example. Is this horizontal illuminance measured on a desktop, or vertical illuminance received at eye level? Is the light source above the head, in front of the person, or from the side? How much short-wavelength content is present in the spectrum? Where is the user actually looking? Does the exposure occur in the morning, at noon, or before bedtime? Does it last for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 8 hours? The same 500 lx can have completely different effects on vision, circadian rhythm, alertness, and emotional state depending on the spectrum, direction, field-of-view exposure, and timing conditions. Similarly, color temperature is not a sufficient indicator of physiological impact. Two light sources with the same 3000 K CCT can have completely different spectral power distributions (SPD) and may generate different levels of melanopic stimulation. Conversely, light sources with different color temperatures can be engineered spectrally to deliver similar melanopic doses. Therefore, emotional lighting cannot stop at: CCT + Lux + RGB color scenes It must move toward: SPD + Alpha-opics + eye-level spatial light dose + timing + human factors + psychological and neurological responses This is the fundamental difference between a \u201cLighting Recipe\u201d approach and ordinary color-tuning scenarios. 03 | Why Are Alpha-opics the Scientific Foundation of Healthy Lighting? The CIE S 026 standard established the \u03b1-opic photometry system, which describes the weighted stimulation of five types of retinal photoreceptors by light: Among these metrics, \u03b1-opic EDI (Equivalent Daylight Illuminance) represents the equivalent daylight illuminance, relative to standard D65 daylight, that would produce the same level of stimulation in a specific photoreceptor system. \u03b1-opic DER (Daylight Efficacy Ratio) describes the photoreceptor stimulation characteristics of a light source relative to its photopic visual efficiency. A light source may have a very high melanopic DER, but if the installed lighting system does not effectively deliver light into the user\u2019s eyes, the actual eye-level melanopic EDI may still be insufficient. Conversely, a lighting system may achieve the target melanopic EDI simply by using very high illuminance, but this could introduce issues such as glare, excessive energy consumption, or reduced visual comfort. Therefore, a truly complete healthy lighting loop should be understood as: LED spectrum characteristics \u2192 luminaire distribution \u2192 spatial reflections \u2192 user eye-level exposure \u2192 time-based dose \u2192 human response The implementation of GB\/T 46119\u20142025 \u201cDose of Non-Visual Biological Effects of Light on Human Eyes\u201d in March 2026 further demonstrates that China\u2019s healthy lighting industry is moving toward a \u201cdose-based\u201d approach. However, it is important to emphasize that non-visual light dose standards provide a foundation for measurement and research. They do not mean that scientifically validated lighting prescriptions for anxiety, depression, or specific emotional outcomes have already been established. The CIE position statement \u201cIntegrative Lighting: Providing the Right Light at the Right Time\u201d also clearly recommends the use of the CIE S 026 measurement framework in research and applications, while acknowledging that many practical application questions still require further research and consensus building. This is the scientific attitude the industry should embrace: Recognize progress \u2014 while also recognizing what remains unknown. 04 | Moving from \u201cColor\u2013Emotion\u201d to \u201cLight\u2013Brain\u2013Emotion\u201d If emotional lighting aims to establish a truly scientific foundation, relying solely on questionnaire-based evaluations is not enough. Subjective assessments are certainly important because emotions inherently involve personal experiences. However, if the only feedback is \u201cI feel relaxed\u201d or \u201cI feel happier,\u201d it remains difficult to distinguish whether the effect comes from: Therefore, future research needs to combine psychological scales with more objective measures of human responses, including: The key value of fMRI lies in its ability to help researchers observe changes in brain regions and functional networks under different spectral compositions, light doses, and exposure conditions. The research focus should not simply ask: \u201cWhich color do participants prefer?\u201d Instead, it should explore deeper questions: This is also the core logic behind Lighting Recipe Studio\u2019s ongoing research into emotional light recipes and fMRI-based studies. Its deeper significance is that it encourages the lighting industry to rethink its understanding of people. Light is not merely a tool for illuminating objects. It is energy entering the eyes, a signal that regulates biological time, a medium that shapes spatial experience, and potentially an important interface connecting the environment, brain function, emotions, and human behavior. However, the closer we move toward life sciences, the more humility we need.
